The Diabetes UK Know Your Risk Roadshow rolled into Town

On the 9th and 10th September, the Diabetes UK Know Your Risk Roadshow rolled into Coventry Broadgate. The purpose of the Roadshow is to carry out individual Type 2 risk assessments to highlight the potential risk of developing Type 2 diabetes in the next ten years. As well as lifestyle choices there are many genetic factors which can affect the risk of developing the condition which people might not be aware of, so the Roadshow raises awareness of these.

A few volunteers from the Diabetes UK Coventry Group helped out on the stand carrying out Type 2 risk assessments for members of the public to highlight their personal risk of developing Type 2 diabetes within the next ten years. Over the two days we carried out nearly 200 risk assessments with 80% or more being referred to their GP for further tests. As well as referring those at moderate and highly increased risk to the GP, we asked people to have a chat with the on-site dietician for advice and information.

On the second day we had a visit from the Mord Mayor of Coventry and his wife. They were very keen to hear about how diabetes affects people's lives and the steps Diabetes UK are taking to raise awareness of the condition, and how the Roadshow is attempting to reduce the number of people diagnosed with it.

Some of the Coventry Group members were photographed with the Lord Mayor.
