Putting Feet First

Putting Feet First

On the 15th July 2015 the Diabetes UK Coventry Group was represented at the Diabetes UK  Putting Feet First event in Westminster. On display were over 135 single shoes with individual messages attached. The messages were individual stories from people who have had an amputation due to having Diabetes. The shoes, some of which were provided by celebrities such as Gary Mabbutt MBE, Mel C, Joe Pasquale and Robin Cousins, all who have an interest in Diabetes, were representing the number of amputations occurring each week across the nation due to Diabetes and the fact that 80% of these amputations could be prevented with better Diabetes education and foot care.

The media were there to record the event for the evening news and Alison from the Coventry Group was interviewed by Channel 4 News to tell her story.  There were also MPs from all parties from around the country listening to the many stories of those Diabetes Voices who were there to highlight the wide difference in standards of care around the country. Alison spoke to a representative from the office of Jim Cunningham, MP for Coventry South, to explain some of the issues with Diabetes care in the Coventry area. If the standard of care is improved both in hospitals and especially in GP Practices and there is better access to Information and education, this number of amputations could be dramatically reduced, as could the occurrences of other complications such as blindness, heart disease and stroke.
