At the start of National Diabetes UK Week the Coventry Group took part in the Big Collection Weekend at the TESCO Superstore on Clifford Bridge Road. This year TESCO's Charity Partnership is shared between Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation.
Over the weekend volunteers spared a few hours of their time raising money for both charities. Earlier in the year the British Hear Foundation carried out a similar collection and the proceeds, like our collection, were shared between the two charities. The Coventry group also had a table of information and through speaking to many of the regular shoppers we encouraged them to continue to eat healthily and explained the simple ins and outs of the condition and ways to reduce the risk of being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. We spoke to several people who had recently been diagnosed, giving them support and information, supplied by Diabetes UK, on how to cope with living with the condition. Over the weekend the collection raised £557 and the store did their own beach party with staff donating to wear summer beach wear instead of the uniform for a day. This raised £410.
TESCO have been very supportive of Diabetes UK over the last three or four years with staff participating in many in-store events to raise funds. These events include things like a Bounce to Brazil competition during the World Cup and a danceathon. Both of these events raised funds and the Coventry Group were invited along to help and spread information and support.
